Jonathan "Nate" Raphael
A purpose of the nonprofit tax business is to help seed and bootstrap business startups for disadvantaged entrepreneurs. We are presently working with CITVN Coop member Jonathan "Nate" Raphael, who is developing relationships within the Boston Haitian community.
The Greater Boston area has a significant Haitian population, with estimates ranging from nearly 70,000 to around 73,627 people in the metropolitan area, over half of whom are naturalized. This makes the Boston area one of the largest Haitian communities in the United States.
OUR MISSION
CITVN Cooperative, Inc is a 501(c)3 nonprofit social cooperative business formed to assist disadvantaged people in the development of cottage industry business. It has operated since 2009, successfully seeding and bootstrapping 20 startups while serving the needs of the homeless with purchase and distribution of monthly MBTA transit passes to remove a significant barrier to achieving a sustainable life platform with human dignity.
CITVN is a member of the Catholic Media Association. Our YouTube documentary productions are distributed for free to 47,000 subscribers, to include: leadership in 13,000 parishes, 20,000 professors at 196 Catholic universities, seminaries and religious orders located in 76 countries.
The latest Point-in-Time (PIT) count for Greater Boston in January 2024 recorded 21,182 people experienced homelessness, a significant increase from the previous year's count of 12,674 in 2023.

In Boston, tax preparation services from non-CPA professionals can range from about $220 for a simple return to several hundred dollars for a more complex tax situation. Local tax firms, national chains like H&R Block, and independent preparers may offer different pricing structures.
2025 average Boston fees by return type
- Simple Form 1040, 1040 SR, or 1040 NR and state return: Around $220. This is for standard filings without itemized deductions. We suggest donating $100 to help the homeless.
- Itemized Form 1040 with Schedule A and state return: About $323. We suggest donating $160 to help the homeless.
- Self-employed individual (Schedule C) and 1040 ES for sole proprietors: Preparing a Schedule C typically costs an additional $192 on top of the base Form 1040 fee. We suggest donating $200 to help the homeless..
- Gig Workers: National tax chains (e.g., H&R Block) online self-employed options average $125 plus state fees for self-service. For in-person filing with a tax professional, the fees will be higher. We suggest a $100 donation to help the homeless.
- Moderately complex returns (Schedules B, D, E): Fees typically range from $400 to $600. Interest and Ordinary Dividends, Capital Gains and Losses, Supplemental Income and Loss. Stock compensation (RSUs, ESPPs, NSOs), gift tax, expatriate tax, foreign national tax issues, multi-state filings, 1040 X amending tax returns. We suggest donating $300 to help the homeless.
- Complex returns: Single-member LLC Form 1040 (Schedule C, E, or F), Multiple-member LLC Partnership Form 1065, LLC Corporation Form 1120-S, Form 1120-C Cooperative Association, Nonprofit Form 990, multiple streams of income, rental property): These can cost $800 to $1,500 or more. We suggest donating $750 to help the homeless.

You may qualify for Free Tax Preparation based upon income ($70,000 household income or less), age, disability, or English proficiency. These services are offered by IRS-certified volunteers at local sites, or you can use free software online if you meet certain income thresholds.
About 37% of filers qualify for simple 1040 self-serve return preparation.
